The guembri (also known as the sintir or hajhuj) is the sacred three-stringed bass lute at the spiritual heart of Gnawa music. Each guembri is hand-carved from a single piece of wood and covered with camel leather by master craftsmen (Maallems) in cities like Essaouira and Marrakech. The qraqeb (also called krakebs or Moroccan castanets) are iron percussion instruments whose powerful clashing rhythm drives the trance ceremony. Together with the tbel drum and the bendir frame drum, they form the complete Gnawa ensemble.
Gnawa ritual objects like bakhoor incense, the traditional mabkhara (incense burner), and sacred aromatics such as fassoukh resin play an essential role in the Lila ceremony. The chachia hat, babouche slippers, and cowrie shell adornments are not merely decorative but carry deep cultural and spiritual significance passed down through generations of Gnawa practitioners across Morocco.
